      Rebuilding Haiti

      Dear Friends:

First and foremost, Happy New Years to all and may God shine his grace on us yet another year.

We are now going on two years since the life changing earthquake of 2010.  Thanks to the gracious donations received from around the world, Haitians are trying to rebuild and recover.  However, digging themselves out of the quake is one thing but digging out of 300 years of poverty is another.  Having returned from another trip to Haiti I saw firsthand the recovery process at work.  NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) are still on the ground and doing tremendous work.  Slowly, the process of healing is being turned over to the Haitians.

At Hospital Bernard Mevs the mantra of self healing is being perfected.  As foreign volunteers we are providing our expertise in two ways: 1) Clinical skills in caring for patients; and more importantly, 2) Educating the Haitian Physicians, Nurses, Students, and newly certified EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians).  The former allows us to treat a few hundred patients at a time when we are there.  With time, volunteers and interest will wane.  The latter, however, is leaving a lasting immeasurable set of skills and attitudes in Haiti.  These new mentalities towards medicine are taking root and with time, will come to fruition – creating in Haiti the standard of care we expect – the standard of care that should be a human right for all.

Please look around at the pictures from this last trip and prior ones as well.  Also, stay tuned for a new video and updates to “Where’s Haiti.”

As always, these trips are funded by your munificent donations.  Without your support I would not be able to provide the care I do.  Our next trip will likely be in about 4 months.  Our fundraising goal in the meantime is $4000.  Please donate generously and spread the word.  Donations can be made by clicking here.  If you would rather donate by writing and mailing a check or money order, please contact me by clicking here for more information.

      Yours Truly,

      Tipu V. Khan, M.D.
